Fly Fishing the Western U.S.

Among the many fly fishing destinations are fly fishing Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and Rocky Mountains. If you are a fan of trout then Montana is the place to go for a fly fishing vacation. Montana has thousands of miles of rivers and streams for trout and has trout waters that are among the finest in the United States. It is not uncommon to catch a trophy trout while fly fishing in Montana. Montana is truly a paradise for fly fishing.

From Billings to North of Kalispell a fly fisherman will find unlimited varieties of rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout. The Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks stock the trout and the amount of trout is outstanding and cannot be matched anywhere else in the country. When you are a fly fisherman Montana cannot be beat. Pay attention to local laws but remember fly fishermen get preferential treatment!

In Colorado, there are four major lakes located in the Granby area. These lakes have plenty of ramps and marinas for boats. Lake Granby is well known for have 7,250 surface acres and 40 miles of shoreline: perfect environments for fly fishermen. Grand Lake is Colorado’s largest natural lake, which is why it holds huge mackinaws. Shadow Mountain Lake also produces 20 pound mackinaws. These lakes are also well known for great ice fishing in the winter.

In New Mexico, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Taos and the Enchanted Circle give fly fishermen rivers without crowds. The waters produce some of the finest wild brown trout and also the native Rio Grande cutthroats.

Another wonderful fly fishing destination is the Rocky Mountain National Park, which provides useful information for fly fishing the Rocky Mountains. Check out the nearest information center and research the internet to find the best fly fishing areas in the Rocky Mountains. There are over 400 miles of water streams and more than enough room for fly fishing. The first thing you need to do is find an area where the fish are before hiking into the wilderness. Learn the waters and streams that have the best and the biggest trout. Plan your route using this information and be sure to find the best access points.

As every angler knows, each species of fish has its own special time of day where they are the most plentiful and are more apt to take the bait. Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and the Rocky Mountains have the most beautiful surroundings. However, it just would not be the same when you are on a fly fishing vacation if you end up without any fish.
